A major highlight of the 2019 Nuffield Annual Conference will be the pre-conference visit to Blakenhall Park and the enterprises run by The Mercer Family.
All Nuffield Scholars, Roger, Rob and Alec are looking forward to hosting the event and extend a very special invitation to UK scholars who missed out in 2017 when the Triennial programme visit was over-subscribed.
The Mercer Family operates a collection of progressive and diversified enterprises - employing over 90 people and providing a number of profit centres. These centres include arable farming, both in the UK and Australia, high welfare pork and chicken marketed through their own Packington Free Range brand, plus a number of on-farm diversifications, from office accommodation to renewable energy.
As strong advocates of the ‘triple bottom line’ philosophy, the family is focussing not just on profitability, but also on social and environmental factors. The Mercers are passionate about the environment and support a number of environmental schemes. They also believe strongly in educating the next generation about where their food comes from and run a Farm Link programme which engages with over 5,000 children annually.
With the aim of promoting healthy eating amongst families from poorer demographics in Staffordshire, their latest initiative, launched by Rob, is ‘Farm Fresh Revolution’, a charity distributing fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and eggs, to parents whose children are at primary school.
